Travel Teachings

Obviously when studying abroad in the heart of Europe – trips will be made. I did some sightseeing in Munich and went to Oktoberfest (figured after three years of Oktoberfest in Hays I should check out the real deal), visited Vienna with family, and Prague with friends. I also went on a 5-day solo trip to Rome and Naples, then met up with fellow FHSU tigers in Milan, and made a spontaneous visit to Madrid. These trips have been incredible and taught me so much about this world and about myself.

1. Roaming Solo

Never have I gone on a trip by myself – and I had my doubts – but I had the best time. So much is learned when there is no one else to count on. I am a very independent and strong-willed person and thrived in the freedom of being somewhere completely new – having little to lose and everything to gain. I had nowhere I needed to be but planned to be everywhere. I woke up early every morning and was out until dark. Being by myself allowed me to visit anything I wanted, walk as many kilometers as I pleased, stop and stare at random buildings for any amount of time, and eat whenever/whatever. There is no one to keep in consideration when making decisions which allows for very efficient and relaxing exploring.

2. Enjoying the Moment

Whether I was on a guided tour or attempting to guide myself with a tourist map, I took in every sight/sound/smell with full wonder and amazement. I could be completely lost with no one in sight and just relish in the peace and beauty that surrounded me. The history in the cities I visited is unmatched and the buildings are designed with such detail that I could never see enough. Just walking around aimlessly revealed so much and I loved every minute of it.

3. Shit Happens

Finding the humor in situations where everything is going wrong is another skill I’m developing. I have experienced broken tram systems with information about alternate routes given in Italian, watched a train I had a ticket for drive away while standing right next to it, dealt with multiple flight delays, and had things stolen. Freaking out or getting down about anything that you have no control over does absolutely nothing for the situation. Laughing about my circumstances and knowing everything will turn out fine was often necessary and allowed me to slow down a bit and just be grateful. I mean, my train left without me – but I’m in Naples!

4. We’re All Human

People are usually incredibly kind and willing to help. It always amazes me how reluctant we as humans are to associate with each other when this world is filled with honest, good-hearted citizens. Staying in hostels and going on tours has given me the opportunity to connect with numerous people from all over the world. Everyone has their own story, interests and beliefs and it is so fun to learn about that.

My song has been The Optimist by Evie Irie. She starts out by saying “Lately, it’s been a little bit wild. I wake up wearing this disgusting smile.” I have never been able to relate to that more than I have during this time. Having complete freedom to fully give into my wanderlust has been an unforgettable experience.
